SUMMARY OF MY WORK
INTRODUCTION

My earliest influence was the rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix.  I was fascinated by the virtuosity and feats of imagination in the rock or jazz solo.  I sought ways to emulate this process by pictorial means and I invented a variety of ways to test and explore my imagination and powers of invention.

Some of these utilise musical formats such as the theme and development of classical sonata form or theme and variations.  I also borrowed procedures from the sciences and mathematics to create complex interacting combinations of controlling structure and imagery.

This work has been evolving since the late Seventies.  Because the emphasis is on the act of creation and not necessarily the presentation of the end result much of my early work was not intended for exhibition.  With tongue in cheek I coined the term IONISM (this is what you get when "Express" is removed from "Expressionism"!) for this work.

I started to create paintings for exhibition using IONIST principles in the early Eighties.  I have continued to expand this body of work until the present day.

In the latter part of the Nineties I began to combine my system based art with observation to create a long series of MEDITATIVE LANDSCAPES.

I founded the IONIST ART GROUP in 1987 to meet like minded artists and to collectively explore multidisciplinary art forms and ideas.  Exhibitions were organised, monthly discussion meetings staged and a quarterly newsletter published.

I expanded my areas of interest in the early Nineties and began to create and stage events of all kinds to raise funds and campaign for charities.  Part of  this work was done under the name of ARTISTS FOR ANIMALS.

In 1994 I began a series of exhibitions under the name of MODERN WILTSHIRE ARTISTS with the aim of presenting and promoting Modern Art in my area.
